Just Ministry is a book on professional ethics for those involved in pastoral ministry, whether ordained or lay. It aims to stimulate a new attitude among ministers to view themselves as professionals and to take seriously the responsibilities that come with this identity. At a time when concerns for misconduct, scandals of abuse, and liability have brought pastoral ministers under greater scrutiny than ever before and have threatened to undermine their morale, this book offers a positive perspective on the vocation of pastoral ministry and wise ethical guidance to foster integrity in ministry. In this way it is a resource of preventative education for pastoral ministry. By examining the professional aspects of a ministerial vocation, it provides a guide for ministers to be accountable in offering their pastoral service with expert knowledge and skill and with good moral character. It builds upon a theology of vocation, a covenantal model of ministry, and a vision of professional identity.

Grounded in the Living Word addresses the disconnect between pastoral care and biblical interpretation in a unique -- and much-needed -- manner. In this cross-disciplinary conversation Denise Hopkins and Michael Koppel show how the themes and narratives of the Old Testament can effectively speak to and interact with the real-life stories of people today.Writing in a frank, open style, Hopkins and Koppel have created a richly complex book covering a wide range of pastoral care issues and biblical texts and informed by current scholarship as well as practical pastoral and cultural insights. Through their nuanced approach, the Bible reemerges as a powerful tool for spiritual care, helping pastors and others bridge cultural divides, navigate widely different experiences, and engage in the transformative work of healing persons, communities, and creation. Each chapter includes personal stories that draw readers into the issues, challenges, and questions to be raised in the following pages; questions for reflection and group exercises dispersed throughout; take-away points that give practical suggestions; and a closing prayer to help anchor the reader in the community of faith.

The study of pastoral care in the middle ages has seen a resurgence in recent years. Scholars are now approaching this subject less from their respective ecclesiastical or parochial biases and more out of an effort to understand the significant role pastors (secular and religious) had in the shaping of medieval society at large. This book explores some of the new ways scholars are approaching this topic. Using a variety of sources and disciplinary angles: theology, preaching, catechesis, confessional literature, visitation records, monastic cartularies and the like, these studies show the many and varied ways in which pastoral care came to play such an important role in the day to day lives of medieval people. Contributors include: C. Colt Anderson, Michelle Armstrong-Partida, Beth Allison Barr, Sabrina Corbellini, Alexandra da Costa, Laura Michele Diener, William Dohar, James Ginther, Joe Goering, Ann M. Hutchison, Greg Peters, C. Matthew Phillips, Andrew Reeves, Ronald J. Stansbury, Susan M.B. Steuer, Mathilde van Dijk, and Anne T. Thayer.

""Christianity's Quiet Success makes an original contribution to the field that significantly improves our understanding of the complexity of Christian belief and practice in late antique Gaul. The book brings a little-known collection of texts to the forefront and offers a series of important insights into their composition and function. which dispel previous scholarly confusion about them."---George Demacopoulos, Fordham University" ""This is a model study. With a deft survey of the evidence and an eye for telling detail. Lisa Bailey has substantially added to our understanding of preaching. modes of persuasion, and everyday religious practice in late antique Gaul. Sins and sinners, problems of faith. the troubling facts of injustice, the shared work of salvation---all are illuminated in this penetrating analysis."---William E. Klingshirn, The Catholic University of America" ""A thorough study of the Eusebius Gallicanus collection was long due, in particulara study that is not focused only on the question of authorship. Lisa Bailey convincingly shows that the collection was made for the average Gallic preacher and that it can therefore provide a picture of late antique Christianity that significantly differs from the one we get through the sermons of figures like Augustine or Caesarius of Arles."---Eric Rebillard.

This deeply insightful ethnography explores the healing power of caring and intimacy in a small, closely bonded Apostolic congregation during Botswana's HIV/AIDS pandemic. Death in a Church of Life paints a vivid picture of how members of the Baitshepi Church make strenuous efforts to sustain loving relationships amid widespread illness and death. Over the course of long-term fieldwork, Frederick Klaits discovered Baitshepi's distinctly maternal ethos and the "spiritual" kinship embodied in the church's nurturing fellowship practice. Klaits shows that for Baitshepi members, Christian faith is a form of moral passion that counters practices of divination and witchcraft with redemptive hymn singing, prayer, and the use of therapeutic substances. An online audio annex makes available examples of the church members' preaching and song.
